Taiko Lemayian

Taiko Lemayian is the current Executive Director of KECOBAT. Taiko Lemayian is a trained agronomist with a Degree of Science in Agriculture from the Egerton University. He has a diploma in community development. He brings in to the consortium a wealth of project design and implementation skills with a vast experience in tourism field especially on community based tourism enterprises development. After spearheading ecotourism policy development for the government of Botswana, he came back to Kenya to launch a similar concept. After carrying out an extensive sector research, he shared with the tourism and wildlife stakeholders including the ministry who ended up to come with a recommendation of forming KECOBAT.

In Kenya, Taiko has worked closely with stakeholders and most importantly with the Ministry of tourism where he spearheaded the development of Culture and Heritage tourism for MOT and tourism sector as a whole. He also carried out research for institutionalization of a community tourism loaning scheme for the corporation under KTDC.

In 2007/8, he was among professional team that developed Community Based Tourism Framework in Kenya funded by European Union and supervised by the Ministry of Tourism.

Together with his team at KECOBAT, he developed the Homestay Concept and together with Ministry of Tourism staff rolled out a country wide accreditation guidelines and operations standards for homestays in Kenya.

He has held several positions including, being a manager at Maasai Land Camel Safaris Ltd, Research Assistant with Arid and Semi-Arid Lands Programme (ASAL Kajiado) on Livestock Marketing for Central Division of Kajiado District, and Project Manager for Elang’ata Wuas Ecosystem Management Programme. He was also a consultant at The World Resources Institute's (WRI) Institutions and Governance Program. He carried out policy-oriented research on the distribution and allocation of wildlife-based public revenues in Narok County, Kenya.

Taiko has written a number of publications in the tourism sector mainly focusing on community based tourism framework and development.

The Kenya Community Based Tourism Network (KECOBAT) network was launched in August 2003 as a membership umbrella organization representing the interest of Community Based Tourism (CBT) organizations in Kenya.

It aims to facilitate information sharing; delivering appropriate technical support and advisory services; mediating and lobbying their interests to government and other relevant institutions and thereby integrating community concerns into national tourism.
