Central Reservations for CBTE’s

KECOBAT is in the process of developing a community tourism Central Reservation system that will afford community members in Kenya low cost yet powerful and effective way to market their products and services locally and internationally. In addition to its quick implementation, one of the most powerful aspects of KECOBAT's shared E commerce tools is that participation requires minimal hardware and software investment. This system would let community businesses fully describe their operations with multiple images, detailed information, email broadcasts, and interactive discussions that is supported by a prototype on-line and manual reservation system. The cooperative engine to be adopted lets all participants use the same core functionality and lets tourism providers affordably build comprehensive on-line brochures that allow and encourage bookings and sales of crafts and other services while KECOBAT remains the centralized “clearing house” inter phase for business data that is comprehensive, accurate and valuable for communities businesses and their clientele.

In addition to the community E commerce systems and the Central Reservation Systems model that will operate on a commission basis, would allow entire associations to work together to promote/encourage tourist visits by leveraging affordable promotional materials distribution lines, strategic web links and publications in the internet. This model will therefore let individual businesses get started at minimal upfront costs devoid of expensive credit card merchant accounts as all funds are allocated by KECOBAT from bank to bank transfers.

The Kenya Community Based Tourism Network (KECOBAT) network was launched in August 2003 as a membership umbrella organization representing the interest of Community Based Tourism (CBT) organizations in Kenya.

It aims to facilitate information sharing; delivering appropriate technical support and advisory services; mediating and lobbying their interests to government and other relevant institutions and thereby integrating community concerns into national tourism.
